Daylily Cross Wilson’s Yellow x Tuscawilla Snowdrift

I did a daylily experiment with what I had on hand, which was Wilson’s Yellow (pod parent) and Tuscawilla Snowdrift (pollen parent). I wondered what would happen if I crossed a large frilly daylily with a small no-frills daylily, as this pairing intrigued me due to the stark differences in their characteristics. What I got seems to be an in-between show of traits, with elements of both parents represented in the resulting blooms. Notice how the Tuscawilla Snowdrift influenced the bloom size, making it larger and showing its potential impact on subsequent generations? Now I know the results may initially appear underwhelming, but what I have learned through this experiment is invaluable for my future breeding endeavors. For instance, I even managed to produce a solid yellow bloom, which adds another exciting dimension to my collection of daylilies.

The unexpected nuances of the flowers have prompted me to reflect on the fascinating realm of plant genetics, where the unpredictability of each cross-breeding exercise leads to endless possibilities. I have developed a deep curiosity about how various environmental factors, such as soil quality and light exposure, can further influence the flowering results and overall health of the plants. I would want to make a cross between two very different parent plants that both have desirable traits, believing that diversity can yield surprising results. Recently, I have done this with seedling selections I’m currently growing, and I look forward to sharing them later on as they bloom and reveal their unique characteristics. Through this process, I’ve come to understand the importance of bud count in my selections; one thing I have decided is that to serve effectively as a pod parent, I will need to see a good bud count, so I am getting much more selective lately in my choices, ensuring that I am nurturing the best potential in my garden.

This ongoing experimentation not only enhances my knowledge but also serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of these beautiful plants. With every seedling that emerges, my enthusiasm grows as I anticipate the diverse array of colors, forms, and patterns that may unfold. This journey of discovery and cultivation continues to deepen my appreciation for the complexity and beauty of daylilies, while inspiring me to see what survives year after year and nurture all the characteristics I value in my garden, allowing me to create an ever-evolving tapestry of blooms that will be a joy to behold.
